Care & Cleaning & Tips for your Sterling Silver Jewelry

    Sterling silver is a beautiful metal that will last for generations with
    proper care. Silver tarnishes when exposed to air, so it Is a good idea to
    keep your silver in airtight zip bags or an airtight container when not in
    use. This will help to retard the tarnishing process and protect your
    jewelry from scratching. Your jewelry is sent in an airtight zip bag and

    sterling silver jewelry is to be worn and enjoyed and your body oils also
    help prevent tarnishing.

    Always remove your jewelry before using any product that contains bleach,
    ammonia, alcohol, fingernail polish removers that contain acetone, and turpentine.
    Some of these can cause a breakdown in the metal alloys leaving the your jewelry
    beyond repair and dull or even pit the surface of your gemstones.

    A silver cloth is the best way to remove tarnish from jewelry. Rub gently
    and a lengthwise motion and it will also shine the stones.

    Excessive tarnish: A non-abrasive brand name liquid or paste silver polish
    to remove heavy tarnish build-up. Make sure you remove any trace of the polish
    from gemstones and rinse thoroughly with clean warm water. Make sure that your
    jewelry is completely dry it before storing it in an airtight zip lock bag or
    container. Never use toothpaste as it is very abrasive. Avoid ammonia-based
    dips as they will eventually eat away the finish of the metal and could be
    harmful to your stones.

    How to Care for your Sterling Silver
    As with every product its life span will depend on the care you give it. These are some helpful hints on how to look after your new pieces.

    • To maintain the original condition of your silver jewelry, polish your pieces regularly using a non-abrasive cleaning cloth.
    • Soap and water will also help keep your silver looking good. Remember do not dry silver off with paper towels or tissues, always use a soft cloth.
    • When you are not wearing your silver jewerly, store them in a cool, dry place. Zip-lock bag and individual cloth pouches are ideal for this and will help prevent both tarnishing or scratching by other pieces.
    • Never immerse your silver jewelry in chlorine, salt water, mineral springs, and suntan lotion. Remember, some household cleaners contain chlorine bleach, these will cause discoloration and also loosen the gemstones.
    • Avoid abrasive cleaners, detergents and commercial jewelry cleaners "dips" especially if the pieces have an oxidized finish. Using harsh polishing cleaners will alter the antique look of your jewerly.
    • Never use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia or any chemical solution to clean opaque gemstones, such as turquoise, malachite, onyx, lapis lazuli and opals. They are a porous stone and may absorb chemicals, which build up inside the stone and cause discoloration. Simply wipe them gently with a moist cloth until clean.
    • If your jewelry contains gemstones or pearls, do not immerse in water, as this can loosen some settings. Never use dips or abrasives cleaners on gemstones.
